We have a kid!

I hope your 4th of July was as fun as ours. We woke up to a new baby goat!!!!!

When we got Meriwhether (mom), we were told she was probably pregnant because a buck lived in the same yard with her. But, for months, she never showed any signs (or size) of being pregnant. Then, about 3 weeks ago, when she blew up to about double her size, we figured she was, indeed, with kid. So AC worked quickly to (1) double the size of the goat yard and (2) build a “kidding castle” so mamas and babies would have a safe, semi-private space to, birth, bond, and grow. In the meantime, we kept a close eye on Meriwether, but she never showed intense signs of labor so AC was surprised when she went out for morning chores on Independence Day and found a fresh, adorable, baby boy goat! Meet Mushu ❤️

Mushu and mama are doing well! He’s hit all his milestone’s so far – nursing, walking and adorably hopping, and pooping orange, which is a good thing, we found out, because it means the colostrum is making it’s way through his system and his intestines and bowels are working correctly.

We’ve also had a second litter of bunnies. Crush came through this time and gave us 10 kits of all different colors – white, brown, black, silver, white with brown spots, and white with black spots. They’re so cute that one of our Airbnb families bought 3 of them as pets! Rex’s crew (two weeks older than Crush’s litter) has moved to the rabbit tractor and are enjoying a fresh patch of grass each day, as a supplement to their normal feed.

We also have two new kittens, and and a new tractor, courtesy of AC’s parents. The kittens, Sarabi (white) and Ralph (orange) are super sweet, but Bagheera isn’t a fan of them and they are not fans of Meeko, and Meeko wants to play with everyone. It’s a love/hate triangle that we’re still navigating, but everyone is still alive…so far.

The tractor is big, blue, and beautiful…and that’s about all I know. AC, meanwhile, is living her best life and is super excited to get to work on her new list of projects!

Speaking of the Caraways, we had 10 of them on the farm for two weekends in a row, as they traveled to and from a vacation in Virginia. The 6 kiddos had a blast playing in the creek and loving on the animals and we’re excited to have them back for “farm camp” next summer!

The garden is coming along slowly, but surely. We have a LOT Of potatoes We’ve had our first small harvest of carrots, a squash, a zucchini, a purple bell pepper, and a couple of tomatoes. We have an eggplant on the way and some winter squash already starting to grow, and we’ve also finished our first round of lettuce – those bolted with the heat, but we let them keep growing so the rabbits could have some yummy salad with their pellets each day. Now, while we wait for the rest of the spring garden to finish, it’s time to start thinking about our fall garden. I’m hoping that seeding goes a bit better this time around 🤞

  • A picture of a harvest laying on a countertop. Produce includes a bunch of yellow and white carrots, a yellow squash, a zucchini, two cherry tomatoes. A pitcher of fresh-cut sunflowers stands in the background.
  • The bottom of a new egglpant pokes out the bottom of some leaves on a eggplant plant
  • A large number of small yellow and red potatoes lay across a red towel
  • A small yellow squash grows at the bottom of a squash plant, which is planted in a bed covered in straw mulch.
  • Small green bell peppers grow on a caged pepper plant

We’ve also finished our barn renovation and have hosted a revolving door of Airbnb guests – and lots of them have participated in feedings and farm tours! As always, let us know when you’re coming to visit so we can block the calendar for you!

In the time since we made this video, we extended the kitchen counter beneath the window so we’ve included that update in the photo at the very end 🙂

On to the next project!

Until next time,

Charli

  1. Holy wow there is SO much going on! Love the video of Meriwhether coming out to check on Mushu! Adorable! And WOW the barn looks AMAZING! I wish you guys had a show, Id love to watch you on HGTV 🙂

    1. We’re learning that there’s never a dull moment, lol! Mushu just gets cuter every day – prancing around as he meets the world.
No plans (or time) for a show yet, but you’ll be the first to know if that changes!

  2. Congratulations on your new kid! I have been thinking about how we all have enjoyed and learned from the first year of your adventure. I so respect and admire that you both made a plan-researched it, had several hands on experiences to help prepare yourselves and even had a major detour while skiing yet nothing dampened your enthusiasm or clouded your goals. And the pictures you included made us feel a part of it all. May God continue to bless you both and please continue to take us along!!

    1. Thank you so much, Carol! You’ve been a fan and follower from the very beginning of this adventure and we appreciate your support!
