We Found Our Homestead!

We’ve been building up to this moment for over a year and it’s finally here! Buckle up, y’all–we’re under contract on our homestead property and it’s gonna be a fun ride!

Our new home is in the tiny little town of Marble, NC, in between Murphy and Andrews, and about 2 hours from Chattanooga (we’re the yellow star in the map below). We’ll be about equidistant from my sister’s family, and my parents, brother and sister-in-law.

The house started out as a 1962 mobile home. Now, I know what you are thinking, but it’s not as bad as it sounds! The mobile home portion of the home is in great shape and the previous owners doubled the square footage with well-built add-ons and a two-car garage. Looking at it from the outside, you can’t even tell there is a mobile home in there somewhere. Because the mobile home was built before 1976, when HUD regulations went into effect, we had to jump through a lot of hoops and getting to this point was a bit of an emotional roller coaster that looked something like this:

But, this past Tuesday, our appraisal came in with good news and we officially close on May 20!!!!!

Our new home is on 21.5 acres with a small, fast-moving stream running through the front yard and some great trails already cut into the back woods. The front 3ish acres are cleared and the rest is wooded. The corner of our property kisses the Nantahala National Forest, which makes AC excited for hunting. The inside of the house needs some updating, and we’re looking forward to that DIY challenge!

Neighboring Murphy is home to the John C. Campbell Folk School, where you can take classes on folksy crafts like blacksmithing, basket weaving, wood turning, contra dancing, and more! 30 minutes north of our property you’ll find the Nantahala Outdoor Center where you can fish, kayak, or raft.
