Home Sweet Homestead

Short version:

On Monday morning, we closed on our property! Give us a few months to settle in and build some things out, then we’re open for visitors 😉

Long version:

Last week, AC drove back to Louisiana for her nephew’s 8th grade graduation. I opted to sit that one out because we’d already made that drive twice in the last 4 months so I was tapped out.

Not only did AC get some good quality time with her family, but she brought back some toys for the homestead including:

  • a weedeater
  • 3 deer stands
  • a deer feeder
  • 2 hunting bows
  • two single-seat kayaks w/ paddles and life jackets
  • an aluminum boat and…
  • a zero-turn mower!

Needless to say, there wasn’t much room left in the truck for all our other stuff, but we shoved as much in there as we could! We also loaded up my parents’ faithful mini van, Big Blue. We packed Blue to the gills with tools, bee boxes, office furniture, art, kitchen supplies, etc. and my parents will drive it all down for their first visit next weekend.

We pulled out of my parents’ driveway at 7am on Monday so we could make it to our final walkthrough of the property at 10am. It was a beautiful day in Marble and our land just…sparkled. We pulled in the driveway to see blue mountains rising behind our green fields, the stream was babbling, the flowers were blooming, the birds were chirping, a nice breeze was lightly blowing, and everything felt right.

We finally settled in the mountains <3

The sellers also left behind some helpful items so we had our very own little treasure hunt during our walkthrough. We’re also very thankful to the sellers for taking care of the home even during their exit!

After our walkthrough, we dropped the boat and unloaded the back seat of the truck, then headed to closing. Signing went smoothly, we got the keys immediately, and AC and I went for a bbq lunch afterward. We went back to the house one last time to unload the mower (since we didn’t have time pre-closing). We decided this was our first “homesteady” project because we rigged up some backwoods tomfoolery to get that monster safely on the ground, but we got it done with no injuries!

After a quick celebration, we jumped in the truck to speed over to pickup a UHaul trailer in Andrews, NC on our way to Greensboro. We had a 4-hour trek and needed to meet friends by 6:30pm for more treasures.

One of our friends in Greensboro is closing on her new home tomorrow (congrats, Lauren and family!) and her seller was trying to get rid of a queen-sized bedroom set. Her price was right so we told her we’d take it. Thus, our first stop in Greensboro was Lauren’s soon-to-be new house to load up the bedroom set. We were surprised to find out that the set also included a few extra pieces we hadn’t accounted for! We happily loaded those, too, and crossed our fingers that we’d still be able to fit all of our things in the trailer and truck bed.

The next day, we tackled the storage unit. Despite the giant “estate sale” we had back in June, we somehow still have SO MUCH stuff in our unit and, with the addition of the surprise bedroom furniture, we couldn’t fit it all in our truck and trailer. After weighing the price of a rental with the price of a return trip and an extra month or two for storage fees, we made the decision to go ahead and book a one-way rental for a 1/2 ton pickup truck so we could clear everything out in one go. It was an unexpected cost, but I got to drive a pretty cool, brand new F150 that made an incredible 32 mpg during our trip back!

Our 2024 Ford F-150 rental had all the bells and whistles!

On Wednesday, AC had her last follow up with her shoulder doc. She’s doing great and he gave her the all clear to continue life as usual (or at least as “usual” as she can while still regaining mobility and strength on her left side). After the appointment, we made the 4-hour trek back to Marble and arrived around 3pm. We unloaded “my” pickup, then cleared out the UHaul. By the time we returned each of those, made a stop at Lowes to return some things, and picked up groceries, it was 8pm and we were exhausted. We ate dinner, set up our bed, took showers, and hit the hay hard.

Today was our first full day at home! We had breakfast on our porch and enjoyed the sun shining on the mountains, the birds chirping in the trees, and our stream babbling through the yard. After we got WiFi installed this morning, I worked from the porch the rest of the day because, let’s face it, the view ain’t bad at all!

My view from the porch includes our stream (left); chicken coop, shed, and pasture (center); with mountains in the background!
A shot of our stream as it meanders under the bridge.

Until next time,

Charli
