Last Angel Fire Update

I can’t believe it’s been 3 weeks since I last shared an update. Eeek! Short version: We’re still in NM and it’s still snowing. Long version: AC has been busy at the ski school. So busy, in fact, that she suggested I go home the week between Christmas and New Years since that is peak week on the slopes so she wouldn’t be around much. So I did. And it was great! My parents scooped…

Snowy New Mexico!

Hiya! It’s been a while since I provided an update, but rest assured we’re still alive and enjoying a real winter with AC’s parents in Angel Fire, NM. Week one in Angel Fire went by calmly. I set up shop in the basement and it’s been a great little office. And the decorations coupled with the wood stove in the living room sometimes makes me feel like I’m in a Hallmark Christmas movie. We’ve even…

Petrified Forest & Farmington

Petrified Forest is a pretty neat little National Park! We spent the first half of Monday exploring the colorful petrified wood and the rainbow-striped hills. This park was small, which y’all know I prefer, and packed a punch. For others like me, who don’t know much about petrified wood, it comes from ancient trees that have turned to stone! 200 million years ago, a tree might fall into a river. Over time, changing water levels…

Cacti, Cowboys, and Caves

We spent Friday in Saguaro National Park. It was cold and rainy most of the day, but we still managed to fit in a couple short hikes and even see some crested Saguaros. The “crested” part is a genetic deformation of the cactus that makes it look like Mr. Broccoli from Veggie Tales. The crested Saguaros that we saw all had spots on the crest that resembled a face and they had upright arms. This…

Internship Complete!

I write you today from the road, per usual. The difference, though, is that we are not headed to another farm. Though we will never stop learning, we have officially finished the “internship” portion of our adventure! Over the past four months, we have lived at, worked on, and learned from 4 very different farms. Starting with the 166-acre, multi-family operation in Canada and ending with a 9-acre goat dairy in Arizona, we have collected…

Giving Thanks

This year has been full of excitement, opportunity, and adventure. AC and I have so much to be thankful for including the love and support of you all, our cherished friends and family! We have one more week of farming ahead of us before we head to the Caraways in Angel Fire, NM for ski season. It’s amazing how fast our “adult internship” has flown by and we can’t wait to put all of our…

Taking It Easy

This past week was pretty low key so this will be a short post. We completed our morning and evening chores each day, per usual. AC worked with Annabelle to muck stalls and rearrange the office. I made a few trips into town this week because I needed a more reliable WiFi connection for a couple of meetings. The farm has WiFi, but it’s slow at best. Not quite reliable enough to host a client-facing…

Phoenix & Florence

Y’all, its been a while since I shared an update–my apologies! Now I understand how some folks make a blogging their full-time job. Anywho, here we go… Saturday afternoon we headed into Phoenix as our last stop before heading to our next farm stay. I found this bar/restaurant that focused solely on mead, and since AC has talked about possibly making mead on our farm one day, I decided we needed to do a little…

Joshua Tree

We’ve spent the last few days in and around Joshua Tree National Park. We got our first taste of Joshua Tree on Thursday when we stopped for photos at Skull Rock, then spent some time in the Hall of Horrors–a “choose your own adventure” area and a scrambler’s paradise. AC had a great time jumping and crawling and climbing across all kinds of rock formations (she’s part mountain goat). Next, we made a quick stop…

R&R

Every now and then, a grand adventure needs a day of rest, relaxation, recuperation, and all the other healing “r” words. And that’s exactly what Monday and Tuesday were for us! We woke up Monday morning in Newport Beach. We grabbed a spot in a coffee shop for a couple hours of work, then we met one of AC’s favorite former colleagues from UTexas athletics, Joy (a different Joy from the one we met up…
