What are we doing here?
Hi and welcome! We’re AC and Charli and we want to share our experiences with you in the hopes that we can teach you something, make you feel seen, or just put a smile on your face.
Tilling Our Story is just that: a way for us to share our story with you. Let’s start that story off with our current adventure. For the past year(ish) we’ve been taking steps toward our dream of starting a homestead. We’re excited for a simpler life where we’re closer to nature, less focused on material things, and more self-sufficient. For a while, this dream felt pretty far off, but, recently, all the pieces started quickly falling into place! A friend of mine compared our long planning phase to trudging up a steep hill, and the things-falling-into-place phase as us now running down that hill (or rolling, if that strikes a fond memory for you).
How did “we” start?
This is where it makes sense for me to tell the story of how AC and I came to be “we.” However, the beginning of our story has all the makings of a Hallmark movie (or at least, that’s what my friends tell us) so I’ll save that for its own post. For now, I’ll just cover the basics:
- We got married in October 2019. We rented a lodge in the mountains of Asheville, NC, invited our 50 closest friends and family members, and got married on the front porch. That alone would tell you a lot about us. We’re not fussy, we value personal experiences, and we’ll choose the mountains over the beach every time.
- AC is from Louisiana. As the second of five kids, AC grew up to be a very self-sufficient person! I mean, she graduated from undergrad and grad school with no debt, for crying out loud (and even threatened to not marry me until I paid mine off)! She was a tomboy through and through; she loved hunting with her dad and playing softball, basketball, and soccer. Now, at the ripe old age of 35, she has the soul of a 72-year-old and just wants to be retired. Ha!
- I, Charli, am a Carolina girl. I was the oldest of three and fit that stereotype to a “T”! I was quite the little nerd growing up, so much so that my mom says my “undergrad” experience (you know, when you move off to college and test the limits a little…or a lot, no judgment here) didn’t actually happen until I moved to Boston for grad school. Now, I’m an instructional designer, amateur woodworker, and avid DIYer–those latter two really come in handy with the constant projects that accompany home-ownership and a soon-to-be homestead!
So that’s a little bit about us. You’ll learn more as we share our stories on the blog. In the meantime, feel free to poke around, leave a comment, and check back soon for the next post!
Until next time,
Charli & AC
