Yesterday we got our first egg!
One of our ladies finally decided to start pulling her weight and has given us 2 eggs so far (one yesterday and one today). Now we just need her friends to get with the program, too, before AC follows through on her threat to turn them into dinner.
This past weekend was very “homesteady.” It was exactly what I expected homestead life to feel like: productive!
Last Friday, we participated in Murhpy’s monthly Art Walk where local vendors stay open late and local organizations set up tables along the main drag to sell items and raise funds. We found a cute little store that acts as an extension of the Folk School, selling handmade wares and offering small workshops. We wandered through a couple antiques shops and the Murphy Art Center, and made a stop for ice cream. I’m looking forward to next month’s Art Walk so we can explore more shops! Not that we can’t explore them now, the event just provides a bit more incentive 🙂
We started off Saturday with a trip to our local farmers’ market where we bought some herbs, eggs, and another tomato plant. Then we went thrifting, in search of some side tables, lamps, and other odds and ends we still need in the house. Murphy has a lot of thrift stores, all benefiting a local cause like the Humane Society, victims of domestic abuse, and veterans. We found a few things at those shops, but we hit the mother-load at an unexpected road-side flea market that we stumbled across. While Murphy has lots of thrift stores, they don’t seem to have any yard sales and now we think we know why: this “flea market” seemed more like a public yard sale; like tailgating, but with junk to sell. AC found two cute matching end tables and got the sellers to throw in a set of matching lamps, all for $20! She’s good at finding a deal and bartering – got those skills from her mama.
We hit the grocery store on our way home. We unloaded all our goods, then AC started weed eating – a multi-hour, multi-day job with the amount of land we know have – and I did some work in the garden. Then I organized the garage, which will also be my shop, and started on some shelves for AC’s entertainment-center-turned-armoire.
On Sunday, we went to church and I baked some bread. It was a full weekend!
Over the past few days, our house has been a revolving door of contractors as we get quotes for various projects that we want to tackle in the near future like:
- converting the raised barn to a loft that we can rent out
- converting the Amish shed to a bunk house for friends and family
- updating some of the electrical components in our home
Hopefully we’ll be able to dive into those soon!
I’ll end with this Public Service Announcement: Always use the safety thingy!
I say this AFTER I neglected to use the provided guard and my fingertip met the blade of my mandolin slicer, resulting in a 2.5 hour stint in the emergency room because I wouldn’t stop bleeding. I’ll spare you the gruesome photos. This all happened two Thursdays ago so my finger is almost healed, but still, save yourself the hassle – safety first, friends!
Until next time,
Charli
Yay for the first egg! You can always have chicken soup with the others if they don’t start laying soon! Thank you for sparing us the gross photos of the finger….and hope you heal soon!
Ekkk so glad your finger is ok!
